Sol'Jibe has a growing reputation of musical innovation in the intermountain west that reflects the talent of diverse and gifted musicians. Imagine combining classical violin with Cuban percussion and flamenco guitar with jazz saxophone! From Africa to India, from Latin America to Europe, this group can offer audiences of all ages a well-rounded and energetic exploration of the world's music and its fusion with American music and culture. Over the centuries, people across the globe have developed thousands of percussion instruments, ranging from simple click sticks to booming bass drums to melodic marimbas. In this "edu-tational" program, Pete Fairley shares stories and sounds from many different cultures. Participants will discover the wide variety of percussion that is employed in world music, and learn about techniques unique to particular musical styles. They will also be entertained by traditional stories told to the accompaniment of the instruments featured in the tales. The session concludes with a short drum circle, where everyone is invited to pick up an instrument and express their own internal rhythm! Flamenco Guitar & Percussion Duet No sticks, no picks, and all acoustic!! Dennis Fecko's classical guitar meets Pete Fairley's global hand percussion in an exploration of musical styles ranging from flamenco to jazz. This duet creatively demonstrates the underlying unity in diversity, where music acts as a doorway to experiencing and understanding other cultures. ![]() Slow Djinn Fez presents "Journey to the First Musical Instrument," an exploration of the roots of music. What was the first musical instrument? Why do people from all parts of the globe love music and dance? What does modern music in the US have in common with traditional music from the Middle East? The band will demonstrate some of the answers by playing songs from countries ranging from Morrocco to Armenia and using instruments ranging from the oud to electronic percussion.
