Musicians I've Studied With

Zakir Hussain
Zakir is synonymous with tabla. One of the great maestros of these drums from India, I am thankful to study tabla in his class for a week each year. He has dozens of CDs and performs all across the globe, in both classical Indian and world fusion styles.

Emam
My primary tabla teacher, Emam's sense of humor is only rivaled by his musicianship. Like his teacher Zakir, he has also recorded many CDs and performed around the world.

Layne Redmond
Both a scholar and a great musician, Layne has gathered an amazing collection of ancient images of people playing frame drums all around the Mediterranean. I have been lucky to attend many of her workshops as well as spending two weeks in Brazil on one of her global study-tours. She has authored a wonderful book as well as recorded many CDs.

Babatunde Olatunji
The great Nigerian musical ambassador shared his skills and open heart with many drummmers and dancers in this country. I was fortunate enough to participate in several of his workshops, I only wish I had studied with him more before he passed. Thank you, Baba!

Musicians that Inspire My Work

Ancient Future
One of the pioneers of world fusion music, Ancient Future is lead by guitarist Matthew Monfort. Many world-class musicians have joined him on musical explorations that combine "Ancient traditions with Future possibilities," including my tabla teacher Emam.

Mickey Hart
Grateful Dead drummer and leader of a variety of percussion groups including Planet Drum, Mickey inspired me to explore the world's profusion of drumming styles.

Jai Uttal
Jai's ability to combine traditional Hindu kirtans with Western musical forms will lead you from a smile into a dance, and from there you'll find your heart opening as wide as the sky!

Solace
Solace skillfully combines Middle Eastern instruments and rhythms with modern technology, creating mysterious, beautiful, and powerful music. Tribal-style bellydancers love to dance to Solace!
